After approval from IND the official move to The Netherlands can take off. Related to administration, there are a few obligations that you need to arrange after arriving in The Netherlands as a new resident. The main ones are: visit the municipality, open a bank account and register for a health insurance.
Registration at the Municipality in The Netherlands
- Only applicable when the person stays more than four months in The Netherlands
- Only possible when the expat has an accommodation (rental contract, certificate of ownership) or a temporary accommodation
- To be done within five days after arrival in The Netherlands
- Application for Social Security Number (BSN)
- Registration of Non Inhabitants (RNI) in cases duration of the stay is less than four months

Registration for health insurance
Health insurance is compulsory for all people who live or work in the Netherlands. Therefore, expats from outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland who arrive in the Netherlands must take out Dutch health insurance within four months of receiving their residence permit. Even if they have an existing foreign policy.
Registration for DigiD
DigiD is a form of online ID that allows you to access many services and government websites in The Netherlands. It’s like a digital version of your passport or driving licence.
You need your DigiD to do your administration online in the Netherlands. For example: doing your taxes, applying for benefits and allowances, checking your pension in the Netherlands and many other actions.
